The wine
Auslese means selected harvest, a Prädikat level above Spätlese where individual overripe bunches are picked out by hand, often carrying some noble rot.
The result is a sweet wine of real concentration held together by Riesling acidity, which is what keeps it from cloying. The Rheingau is a short stretch where the Rhine turns west, so the vineyards face due south across the water, and it is the region where German Riesling was first taken seriously: Schloss Johannisberg documented the discovery of noble rot here in 1775. Schloss Vollrads has been in continuous family ownership since 1211, making it one of the oldest wine estates in the world, and sits above Winkel in the Rheingau. This is the half bottle.

View all Schloss Vollrads winesSchloss Vollrads is one of the oldest and grandest wine estates in the world, with a documented history of winemaking stretching back over 800 years. Set in the heart of the Rheingau, it is a legendary name in German Riesling.
The estate vineyards lie on prime south-facing slopes above the Rhine, where slate and loess soils and a favourable climate are ideal for Riesling. Careful, quality-focused farming yields wines of purity, minerality and the grape signature interplay of fruit and acidity.
The range spans crisp, dry Trocken bottlings, the powerful Schlossberg Grosses Gewächs, and lusciously sweet Auslese, showcasing Riesling across the full spectrum of styles.
Historic, elegant and quintessentially German, Schloss Vollrads crafts Riesling of purity and class from one of the world great wine estates.
