Chatto Bird Piper’s River Pinot Noir 2025

The wine
A complex nose of raspberry and red cherry with hints of spice. The palate is elegant, with red fruit and mineral notes, refreshing acidity and fine, balanced tannins.
The Bird vineyard sits in the heart of Pipers River on Tasmania's northern coast, planted in 1998 to Pinot Noir clone 114 on a gentle north-facing slope of sandy loam. 2025 was warm and relatively dry, giving concentrated, detailed Pinot. Hand picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts without whole bunches, and matured for ten months in a 2,500-litre French oak foudre. Chatto is Jim Chatto's own label, made in tiny quantities.
The producer
Chatto
View all Chatto winesChatto is the personal project of Jim Chatto, one of Australia's most respected winemakers and a devoted champion of Pinot Noir. What began as a small planting in the Huon Valley has become a byword for Tasmanian elegance. Every bottle carries the mark of a maker working at the height of his craft.
Tasmania's cool maritime climate is among the finest anywhere for Pinot Noir, and Chatto sources from carefully chosen sites across the island. Long, gentle ripening under southern skies gives fruit of remarkable purity and tension. Yields are kept low, the focus always on detail.
In the cellar Jim Chatto works with a light hand, letting each vineyard speak for itself. Whole-bunch fermentation and restrained oak shape wines of perfume, spice, and silken texture. Nothing is forced; everything is coaxed.
The result is Pinot Noir of genuine finesse, more Burgundian in spirit than most of the New World dares attempt. Rare and sought after, Chatto stands among the leading names of cool-climate Australia.
