The wine
A complex nose of raspberry and red cherry with hints of spice.
The Bird vineyard sits in the heart of Pipers River, on Tasmania northern coast, where the maritime influence is strongest. Tasmania is the coolest wine region in Australia, closer in growing conditions to Burgundy than to the mainland, and its Pinot Noir has a precision the warmer states cannot reach. Chatto is Jim Chatto label in Tasmania, made in tiny quantities from sites across the island alongside his day job as chief winemaker for one of Australia largest groups.
The producer
Chatto
View all Chatto winesChatto is the personal project of Jim Chatto, one of Australia's most respected winemakers and a devoted champion of Pinot Noir. What began as a small planting in the Huon Valley has become a byword for Tasmanian elegance. Every bottle carries the mark of a maker working at the height of his craft.
Tasmania's cool maritime climate is among the finest anywhere for Pinot Noir, and Chatto sources from carefully chosen sites across the island. Long, gentle ripening under southern skies gives fruit of remarkable purity and tension. Yields are kept low, the focus always on detail.
In the cellar Jim Chatto works with a light hand, letting each vineyard speak for itself. Whole-bunch fermentation and restrained oak shape wines of perfume, spice, and silken texture. Nothing is forced; everything is coaxed.
The result is Pinot Noir of genuine finesse, more Burgundian in spirit than most of the New World dares attempt. Rare and sought after, Chatto stands among the leading names of cool-climate Australia.
