The wine

Fresh and aromatic, this easy-drinking Chenin Blanc shows gentle aromas of tangy green apple and is beautifully balanced, with a crisp acidity and a deliciously fruity finish.

Chenin Blanc is South Africa's most planted white grape and its greatest asset, brought from the Loire in the seventeenth century. The Cape has more of it than France does, much of it in old dry-farmed bush vine parcels that crop very little and give concentration a young vineyard cannot approach.

The producer

Wild Garden is a Cape label working Chenin Blanc and Pinotage from Western Cape and Cape Coast vineyards.

The name is apt for South Africa. The Cape Floral Kingdom is the smallest and richest of the world's six floral kingdoms, with more plant species in a small corner of one country than in the whole of Europe, and vineyards across the Cape sit within or beside it. Fynbos, the scrubland that dominates it, grows right up to many vine rows.

Chenin Blanc came from the Loire in the seventeenth century and is South Africa's most planted white; Pinotage was created in 1925 by crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsault and is grown almost nowhere else. Between them they are the most South African pair of grapes it is possible to put in a case.
