Vinos de Montaña Sierra de Gata y Gredos 2021
£11.75
The wine
An elegant field blend showing vibrant aromas of red fruit over a subtle spicy note of white pepper. Light and delicate with wonderful purity of fruit, underpinned by refreshing acidity and soft, lingering tannins. A food-friendly wine from high-altitude vineyards.
Rufete is a rarity: a light-coloured, aromatic native red found almost nowhere outside the Sierra de Gata near the Portuguese border, grown on mountain terraces. Blended here with Garnacha from Gredos, both from vineyards at some of the highest altitudes in Spain.

Gredos has become one of the most talked-about wine areas in the country over the past two decades. Old Garnacha bush vines grow on decomposed granite at 800 to 1,200 metres, some of them a century old, and the combination of altitude, poor soil and tiny yields produces a pale, perfumed, high-acid style of Garnacha that has been compared to Burgundy rather than to the Mediterranean versions of the grape. For years the fruit was sold off cheaply for bulk wine.
Rufete, in the Sierra de Gata further west, is rarer still: a light-coloured, aromatic native red found almost nowhere else, grown on terraces near the Portuguese border.
