Vinos de Montana works in the Sierra de Gredos and the Sierra de Gata, the mountain ranges west of Madrid, at some of the highest altitudes in Spain.
Gredos has become one of the most talked-about wine areas in the country over the past two decades. Old Garnacha bush vines grow on decomposed granite at 800 to 1,200 metres, some of them a century old, and the combination of altitude, poor soil and tiny yields produces a pale, perfumed, high-acid style of Garnacha that has been compared to Burgundy rather than to the Mediterranean versions of the grape. For years the fruit was sold off cheaply for bulk wine.
Rufete, in the Sierra de Gata further west, is rarer still: a light-coloured, aromatic native red found almost nowhere else, grown on terraces near the Portuguese border.
