The wine
Straw yellow with green nuances. Intense citrus aromas with depth on the palate.
Piere is a 12.5-hectare vineyard at Mariano del Friuli, on the stony gravels that give the wine its name: piere means stones in Friulian. The Isonzo plain in Friuli sits between the Alps and the Adriatic on stony river gravels, and the wind that funnels down from the mountains keeps the vineyards dry and the nights cold. Friuli is Italy most respected white wine region, and its natives survived here where most of the country replanted.
The producer
Vie di Romans
View all Vie di Romans winesVie di Romans is a benchmark estate of Friuli, in Italy's cool north-east, and one of the country's finest names for white wine. Under Gianfranco Gallo, who transformed his family's holdings, it has earned a reputation for whites of remarkable texture, depth and precision.
The vineyards lie in the gravelly Isonzo plain, where free-draining soils and a favourable climate give ripe yet vibrant fruit. Low yields and patient cellar work, often with extended lees ageing, build the wines' signature richness.
The estate Chardonnay and Piere Sauvignon Blanc are among Italy's most admired whites, while the Dessimis Pinot Grigio shows just how serious that often-humble grape can be.
Polished, profound and unmistakably Friulian, these are whites for the cellar and the fine table. Discover one of Italy's great white-wine estates.
