The wine

Rocking Horse is a Cape white blend built around Chenin Blanc with Semillon, Roussanne and Clairette, drawn from a number of carefully selected growers across the Western Cape.

The Cape white blend is a genuinely South African category rather than an imported one, built on old Chenin with whatever else suits, and it has become the country most distinctive style of white wine. Thorne and Daughters is John Seccombe project in the Western Cape, buying fruit from carefully chosen growers rather than farming, and every wine is named after a childhood toy or game.

The producer

Thorne & Daughters is one of the most admired names in the new wave of South African wine. Founded by John and Tasha Seccombe, the label seeks out old vines and unfashionable parcels across the Cape to craft whites of remarkable texture and restraint.

The philosophy is one of patience and honesty. Fruit is sourced from mature, often dry-farmed vineyards, handled gently and raised in older oak so that site and vine age, not winemaking, set the tone.

Rocking Horse is the flagship Cape White blend, layered and mineral, while Paper Kite Semillon and the rare Tin Soldier Semillon Gris show the depth of the Cape's heritage vines. Cat's Cradle Chenin Blanc and Copper Pot Chardonnay complete a range of quiet brilliance, alongside the Wanderer's Heart red.

Cerebral yet deeply drinkable, these are wines with a following among the world's sommeliers. Discover the soulful side of the Cape.
