The wine
A fresh, citrus nose with a hint of delicate Mediterranean herbs. Elegant and well-balanced.
Blanc de Blancs here means the traditional Catalan white grapes, Xarel·lo, Macabeu and Parellada, rather than Chardonnay. In 2012 the family left the Cava DO altogether, judging it too loose to mean anything, and now bottle under Conca del Riu Anoia, a designation of their own making that requires estate-grown fruit, biodynamic farming and longer ageing than Cava demands. Raventós i Blanc farm 50 hectares in the Conca del Riu Anoia in Alt Penedès, and the family have grown vines on the same estate since 1497.
The producer
Raventós i Blanc
View all Raventós i Blanc winesRaventos i Blanc is a pioneering Catalan sparkling wine estate with an extraordinary heritage, the family having made wine here since the sixteenth century and produced Spain first ever bottle of Cava. In a bold move, they left the Cava appellation to champion their own terroir-focused identity.
Farming biodynamically on their historic estate in the Conca del Riu Anoia, they work the native trio of Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada, plus rare local varieties, on distinctive limestone soils. Every wine is a single-estate, traditional-method sparkling of real integrity.
The range runs from the fresh Blanc de Blancs and pretty De Nit rose to the more complex single-estate De la Finca and the fascinating native-grape Textures de Pedra, each pure, dry and expressive.
Authentic, characterful and superb value, Raventos i Blanc makes some of the finest traditional-method sparkling wine in Spain, on its own singular terms.
