Loimer Steinmassl Erste Lage Kamptal Riesling 2022

The wine
Rich golden yellow, brimming with apricot, orange zest and ginger. The palate delivers crystal clear structure.
Steinmassl is an Erste Lage site whose name means stone heap, planted on primary rock. Riesling on that ground gives a tauter, more mineral wine than the loess soils that suit Grüner. The Kamp valley runs between the warm Pannonian plain and the cold Waldviertel, the forest quarter, and that meeting of warm days and cold nights is what gives Kamptal whites their aromatic lift and their acidity.
The producer
Loimer
View all Loimer winesFred Loimer is one of Austria's leading growers, farming 80 hectares around Langenlois in the sunny Kamptal. He took over the family winery in 1997 after gaining experience in Germany's Nahe and the Napa Valley.
Unlike producers who prize sweeter styles, Loimer seeks full ripeness in the vineyard then ferments fully dry, giving wines of citrus zest, minerality and balance. The estate has farmed biodynamically since 2006, and Fred co founded the Respekt biodynamic association.
The range runs from vibrant Kamptal Grüner Veltliner and Riesling to structured Erste Lage single vineyard wines such as Käferberg, Steinmassl and Loiserberg, alongside fine traditional method sparkling.
Pure, mineral and precise, Loimer's wines are among Austria's finest. They combine ripe fruit with dry, saline tension. This is Kamptal white and sparkling at the very top level.
