The wine
Vivid red apple and brioche on the nose. Following extensive lees ageing, the palate is rich and fine.
A traditional-method sparkling from Langenlois fruit at 400 metres. Austrian sparkling wine is made in the same way as Champagne, with the second fermentation in bottle and long lees ageing, and the cold Kamptal nights give the acidity it needs. Fred Loimer farms biodynamically at Langenlois in the Kamptal, north-west of Vienna, and was among the first in Austria to convert.
The producer
Loimer
View all Loimer winesFred Loimer is one of Austria's leading growers, farming 80 hectares around Langenlois in the sunny Kamptal. He took over the family winery in 1997 after gaining experience in Germany's Nahe and the Napa Valley.
Unlike producers who prize sweeter styles, Loimer seeks full ripeness in the vineyard then ferments fully dry, giving wines of citrus zest, minerality and balance. The estate has farmed biodynamically since 2006, and Fred co founded the Respekt biodynamic association.
The range runs from vibrant Kamptal Grüner Veltliner and Riesling to structured Erste Lage single vineyard wines such as Käferberg, Steinmassl and Loiserberg, alongside fine traditional method sparkling.
Pure, mineral and precise, Loimer's wines are among Austria's finest. They combine ripe fruit with dry, saline tension. This is Kamptal white and sparkling at the very top level.
