Johann Donabaum Riesling Spitzer Federspiel 2025

The wine
From the steep Spitzer Valley terraces Johann's family has worked for generations. An enchanting Riesling with distinctive peach and apricot aromas, crisp with pure lime and white pepper, underpinned by delicate minerality and a lively finish. Bone-dry Wachau purity that ages beautifully; river trout would be poetically correct.
The producer
Weingut Johann Donabaum
View all Weingut Johann Donabaum winesJohann Donabaum farms just two hectares of family vines clinging to the precipitous, schistous slopes of the Spitzer Valley in the Wachau, and from them has carved a formidable reputation over twenty-five years. Yields are kept incredibly low, production is minuscule, and demand always outruns supply, yet his prices remain remarkably fair.
His philosophy is purity. Where many Austrian growers pick a proportion of botrytised grapes for added richness, Johann believes this distracts from his exceptional terroir; his Federspiel wines are elegant, defined and precise, and they age superbly. He farms sustainably under the Vinea Wachau certification, and the awards and rave reviews keep arriving. Wachau wine from a true grower's grower; drink it with schnitzel, river fish or unreasonable smugness.
