Frédéric Berne Morgon Saint-Jo 2024
£23.95
The wine
Morgon is one of Beaujolais's great crus, and Frédéric Berne's Saint-Jo shows its depth. Old Gamay vines on schist and granite give a wine of real structure.
Black cherry, blackberry and a touch of earth and violet fill a deeper, medium-bodied palate. Concentrated dark fruit, fine tannins and a savoury, mineral finish mark it out.
A fine match for grilled meats, game and roast poultry. Serve at cool room temperature.
The producer
Frédéric Berne
View all Frédéric Berne winesFrédéric Berne is a talented young grower based in Lantignié, in the granite hills of the Beaujolais. Working organically, he crafts pure, expressive wines from Gamay, the region's signature grape. His bottles have quickly become favourites among lovers of characterful, terroir-driven Beaujolais.
The vineyards sit on the distinctive pink and blue granite soils that give the northern Beaujolais its structure and mineral bite. Berne farms with care and a light touch, letting each site speak. His cuvées are named for the very rocks beneath the vines.
From the juicy, floral village wines of Lantignié to the deeper, more structured Morgon cru, the range shows Gamay in all its guises. Whole-bunch fermentation and minimal handling keep the wines fresh, fragrant and alive. There is real finesse and drinkability here.
This is Beaujolais well beyond the everyday, serious yet joyful and always food-friendly. The wines are bright, mineral and beautifully made. Frédéric Berne is a name to watch and to savour, from a rising star of the region.
