The wine
A single-vintage Cognac from 1990, aged thirty years in Limousin oak. Expect dried apricot, walnut, cigar box and candied orange, with the rancio character that only decades in cask can produce.
Frapin have owned their estate in Grande Champagne since 1270 and are among the very few houses that grow, distil, age and bottle everything themselves. Grande Champagne is the first cru of Cognac, a chalk basin whose spirits age longest and most slowly. Vintage Cognac is rare, requiring the cellars to be sealed and inspected by the authorities.

Frapin
View all Frapin winesFrapin sits entirely within Grande Champagne, the most highly regarded of the six cognac crus, with 240 hectares of vineyard. It remains in original family ownership, and the family's history of growing vines and distilling runs back to 1270.In 1480 the Frapin and Rabelais families were joined by the marriage of Antoine Rabelais and Anne-Catherine Frapin, whose son was the writer Francois Rabelais. In 1697 Louis XIV granted a coat of arms to his apothecary, Pierre Frapin.
The cognacs are made by long-established methods handed down through the generations, from grapes grown exclusively on the estate. That single-estate approach is rare in a region built largely on blending bought-in eaux-de-vie.
