Domaine Gayrard Gaillac Rouge Braucol 2022
£14.25
The wine
This characterful red made from the Braucol variety, is generous, supple and full of wild blackcurrant notes, with a touch of spice and delicious green pepper undertones. Soft tannins and juicy fruit fill the palate through to a fruity finish. Braucol is the local name for Fer Servadou, a variety that had nearly disappeared before growers like the Fabres replanted it. Pierre and Laure returned to their ancestors' estate in 2013 and rebuilt it around exactly these lost varieties.
The producer
Domaine Gayrard
View all Domaine Gayrard winesDomaine Gayrard sits on a limestone plateau in the foothills of the Causses de Quercy and has represented this corner of Gaillac for over five centuries. Maurice Gayrard began bottling here in the 1950s, among the first in the appellation to do so. The estate briefly turned to cereals in the 1990s, but in 2013 Pierre and Laure Fabre returned to their ancestors' land and replanted it with indigenous varieties. The old vines of the former Château Moussans were absorbed in 2018, bringing a second terroir with them.
The estate now runs to 30 hectares, certified organic since 2020 and farmed biodynamically since 2019. The wines are made from varieties that had nearly disappeared, Braucol and Loin de l'Oeil among them.
