Domaine Gayrard Gaillac Blanc Loin de l’Oeil 2023

The wine
Fine, intense aromas of white blossom, pear and apple lead to a rich, rounded palate with ample notes of pear and white fruit echoed on the palate. Refreshing with a good weight and balance through to an almond note on the finish. Loin de l'Oeil, far from the eye, is named for the long stalk that holds the bunch well away from the bud. It grows almost nowhere but Gaillac. The estate has been organic since 2020 and biodynamic since 2019.
The producer
Domaine Gayrard
View all Domaine Gayrard winesDomaine Gayrard sits on a limestone plateau in the foothills of the Causses de Quercy and has represented this corner of Gaillac for over five centuries. Maurice Gayrard began bottling here in the 1950s, among the first in the appellation to do so. The estate briefly turned to cereals in the 1990s, but in 2013 Pierre and Laure Fabre returned to their ancestors' land and replanted it with indigenous varieties. The old vines of the former Château Moussans were absorbed in 2018, bringing a second terroir with them.
The estate now runs to 30 hectares, certified organic since 2020 and farmed biodynamically since 2019. The wines are made from varieties that had nearly disappeared, Braucol and Loin de l'Oeil among them.
