The wine

An elegant nose with intense blackberry, black cherry and a subtle smokiness. The palate is robust, dark berry fruit marrying with a marked minerality and fine tannins, and a mouth-watering acidity carries the flavours onto a lingering finish.

Clos Roussots lies south-east of the Maranges premier cru hillside between 250 and 300 metres, on marly Jurassic substratum under a scree of gravel, rock and limestone fallen from the cliffs above, which drains sharply and lends the wine its elegance. The Pinot Noir vines are 33 years old and organically farmed. Hand-picked, gravity fed to stainless steel with 20% whole bunches, fifteen days on indigenous yeasts, then eighteen months in 228 litre barrels, 30% of them new.

The producer

Domaine Chevrot is a fine family estate in Cheilly-lès-Maranges, at the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune. Farmed organically and biodynamically by the Chevrot brothers, it has become the leading name of the Maranges appellation. Its wines are a benchmark for the region.

The domaine works Chardonnay and Pinot Noir across Maranges and neighbouring Santenay, on the limestone and marl slopes of the southern Côte. Organic, low-intervention farming keeps the fruit pure and expressive. Each parcel is vinified separately.

In the cellar the approach is gentle and precise, with whole-bunch ferments and restrained oak that preserve freshness and terroir. The whites are taut and mineral, the reds fragrant and supple. Purity guides the range.

From village Maranges to premier cru Santenay and Maranges, Chevrot offers the southern Côte de Beaune at its best. Fresh, characterful and keenly priced, these are wines for lovers of honest, terroir-driven Burgundy.
