Domaine de L’Enclos Chablis 1er Cru Montmains 2023

The wine
Pale lemon-yellow, with a nose brimming with ripe pineapple and mango lifted by delicate smoky notes. The palate is full and ripe, and the whole complexity of the Kimmeridgian limestone resonates through a wonderfully long, saline, oyster-shell finish.
Montmains is one of the premiers crus on the left bank of the Serein, and this comes from a single 0.55-hectare parcel planted in 1971 on a south-east facing slope, certified organic since 2018 and picked entirely by hand. Romain and Damien Bouchard press the fruit gently into small stainless-steel tanks, ferment with indigenous yeasts and let the malolactic run its course, then age the wine for 13 months on its lees in a mix of tank and oak barrel. The 2023 vintage gave Chablis a second fine year in succession, a mild winter and wet spring giving way to summer warmth that carried the grapes to full ripeness with the balance and aromatic complexity of 2022.
