Lagar de Fornelos is the Rias Baixas property acquired by La Rioja Alta in 1988, when the Haro house first looked beyond its home region. It sits at O Rosal on the Minho river, close to the Portuguese border.
O Rosal is one of the five sub-zones of Rias Baixas and lies on terraced south-facing slopes above the river, which gives it slightly more warmth and shelter than the exposed coastal areas. The Minho divides Spain from Portugal here, and the same grape is called Alvarinho a few hundred metres away on the far bank.
Galicia receives over 1,500 millimetres of rain a year, so vines are trained high on granite posts to lift fruit above the damp and allow air through the canopy. Lindeiros means neighbours or boundary-dwellers, which suits a vineyard on a national border.
