Château du Haut Plateau sits on the high plateau of Montagne Saint-Émilion, the largest and arguably the finest of the satellite appellations north of Saint-Émilion proper. The clay-limestone soils here are close cousins of those on the famous plateau itself, and the wines share much of the character at a fraction of the price. Merlot leads, as it should on this side of the river, giving a plump, approachable style with real purity of fruit.
