Château d'Esclans is the estate that changed how the world thinks about Provence rose. Sacha Lichine, son of the Bordeaux writer and proprietor Alexis Lichine, bought it in 2006 and set out to make rose taken as seriously as any other fine wine, at a time when almost nobody did.
Whispering Angel became the wine that carried the idea, and is now among the most recognised names in the category anywhere. Above it sit Rock Angel and, at the top, Garrus. The Pale is the lighter, more casual expression. The estate lies inland from the coast near La Motte, where old Grenache and Rolle grow on cooler, elevated ground.
