We built The Wine Depot on a slightly cheeky idea: that expensive and good are not the same word. Price buys scarcity, fashion and fancy postcodes at least as often as it buys quality. Strip those away and a whole world of wine drinks far above its price.

The midweek overachievers, under £10

16 Stops Shiraz and 16 Stops Chardonnay both land at £9.95, and both taste like they forgot to check the price tag. Ripe, polished and free of rough edges, they are the wines for a Tuesday that quietly deserves better than a Tuesday.

The dinner-party trick: A Mano Fiano

Pour A Mano Fiano (£12.95) blind and watch people guess twenty-something. This southern Italian white has citrus, a nutty almond edge and a satisfying weight that hints at a far grander bottle. It is the sort of wine that makes you look like you know something the rest of the table doesn’t.

The Pinot lover’s secret: Mencía

Adega Algueira’s Ribeira Sacra Mencía (£17.25) grows on terraces so steep they are farmed by hand, on slopes tumbling down to the Sil river in Galicia. The result is silky, perfumed and fresh, and it drinks like a smart village Burgundy at a fraction of the outlay. The treat that is still a steal

At the top of our range, Escalada Godello (£33.95) and Badenhorst Chenin Blanc (£31.45) are not pocket change. But stand them beside the white Burgundy or grower fizz they cheerfully out-punch, and thirty-odd pounds starts to look like a rounding error.

Why they overdeliver

The trick is no trick at all. You are not paying for a famous name or a Bordeaux postcode; you are paying for what is in the bottle. The value tends to hide in less fashionable grapes, Godello, Fiano, Mencía, and in brilliant but underrated regions like Ribeira Sacra, Swartland and Puglia. Follow those, and you spend less while drinking better.
