Wieninger Wiener Pinot Noir Select 2023
£25.45
The wine
Burgundian in style, expressive, with red cherry and delicate spice.
Pinot Noir from the Bisamberg. Austria makes far less red than white, and Pinot here is a small, serious corner of it. Vienna is the only major capital city in the world with commercial vineyards within its limits, some 600 hectares of them, and Wiener Gemischter Satz has its own DAC. Gemischter Satz means mixed set: a field blend of several varieties planted together, picked together and fermented together, which was the norm across central Europe before monoculture.
The producer
Wieninger
View all Wieninger winesWieninger is the leading name in Viennese wine, an estate that has done more than any other to put the vineyards of Austria's capital on the world stage. Under Fritz Wieninger, it has become a byword for quality and for the revival of the city's great tradition of field blends.
The vineyards climb the slopes of the Nussberg and Bisamberg, farmed biodynamically on limestone and loess overlooking the Danube. Here the historic Wiener Gemischter Satz, a co-planted, co-fermented blend, reaches its highest expression.
The single-vineyard Gemischter Satz bottlings from Ried Ulm and Ried Rosengartl are textured, mineral whites of real depth, joined by a crisp Wiener Riesling and an elegant, perfumed Pinot Noir.
Historic, serious and unmistakably Viennese, these are wines with a genuine sense of place. Discover the finest wines of Vienna.
