The wine

An intense ruby red, with leather and tobacco alongside ripe black fruit and sweet spice.

Reserva requires three years ageing with at least twelve months in oak, and most producers exceed the minimum. Ribera del Duero sits on the high Castilian plateau at around 800 metres, where summer days reach forty degrees and nights fall to single figures. Tempranillo is known here as Tinto Fino or Tinta del País, and that daily swing gives it far more colour and structure than in Rioja.
