The wine
Grillo was bred in the nineteenth century as a Marsala grape and has become one of the more convincing dry whites of Sicily, holding its acidity better than most in the heat.
Sicily is the largest wine region in Italy by area and was for decades its largest source of bulk wine, most of it shipped north to strengthen thinner reds. The native varieties survived that period precisely because nobody thought them worth replacing. Vigneti Zabù work the hills around Lake Arancio at Sambuca di Sicilia, in the west of the island.
The producer
Vigneti Zabù
View all Vigneti Zabù winesVigneti Zabù makes its home in the sun-baked interior of Sicily, one of the Mediterranean's most exciting wine islands. The estate celebrates Sicily's proud native grapes, crafting vivid, sun-filled wines of generous fruit and real character.
The vineyards sit at altitude in the island's rolling hinterland, where warm days and cool nights preserve freshness in the fruit. Nero d'Avola and Grillo lead the way, farmed with an eye for both ripeness and balance.
The range runs from a juicy, spiced Nero d'Avola and a crisp Grillo to the richer Il Passo wines, where partial drying of the grapes adds depth and warmth, including a certified organic bottling.
Bright, generous and thoroughly Sicilian, these are wines of easy pleasure and honest value. Discover the sunshine of Sicily.
