Ultreia Godello Bierzo 2024

The wine
Fresh and fruit-driven, with juicy apricots and peaches, a mouthwatering acidity and a marked minerality.
Godello is the white grape of north-west Spain, nearly extinct by the 1970s with only a few hundred vines left, and now the region most respected white. It gives weight and texture without losing acidity. Bierzo sits in the north-west of Spain, and Mencía is its grape: thin-skinned, aromatic and closer in weight to Cabernet Franc than to anything in Rioja. Raúl Pérez is among the most influential winemakers in Spain, and much of what the region is now known for follows from his work here.
The producer
Raúl Pérez
View all Raúl Pérez winesRaul Pérez is one of the most revered and influential winemakers in Spain, a restless, visionary talent based in his native Bierzo in Castilla y Leon. His wines are prized around the world for their purity, minerality and profound sense of place.
He works with old, high-altitude vines of Mencia and Godello on slate and granite soils, farming naturally and vinifying with an experimental, low-intervention hand that lets each site speak. His genius lies in capturing detail and finesse where others found only rusticity.
His wines appear under two principal labels: the artisanal, terroir-driven single-vineyard bottlings of La Vizcaina, and the more accessible yet equally characterful Ultreia range, from the joyful Saint Jacques to the serious Valtuille and La Claudina.
Ethereal, mineral and endlessly compelling, Raul Pérez has redefined Bierzo and stands among the true masters of modern Spanish wine.
