The wine

White peach, grapefruit and citrus blossom combining with nuances of toasted oak. The palate is rich and layered.

Named for the 125 Gimblett Road vineyard, known locally as the Tin Shed. Chardonnay on the gravels comes out fuller and more textural than the taut Marlborough style, and this is the estate top bottling of it. The Gimblett Gravels is an 800-hectare district defined strictly by its soil, deep river gravels left exposed when the Ngaruroro river shifted course in an 1867 flood. It is one of very few appellations anywhere drawn by geology rather than by boundary lines on a map.

The producer

Trinity Hill is one of the defining names of Hawke's Bay and a pioneer of the Gimblett Gravels, the warm, free-draining district that has become New Zealand's finest home for Syrah and Bordeaux varieties. The estate helped prove what this remarkable terroir could do.

From its Hawke's Bay range of bright, accessible wines to the concentrated Gimblett Gravels bottlings, Trinity Hill farms with an eye for both freshness and ripeness, drawing structure and spice from the sun-warmed stones.

The Gimblett Gravels Syrah and the flagship Homage are benchmarks of the New World for this grape, peppery and profound, while The Gimblett red and the 125 Chardonnay show the estate's range. The Hawke's Bay wines offer the same craft in a more immediate style.

Ambitious, age-worthy and proudly of their place, these are wines that put a region on the world map. Discover the estate that helped define the Gimblett Gravels.
