The wine

Corvina is the backbone of Valpolicella and the grape that gives the region its sour-cherry signature, and bottling it alone rather than in the usual blend is unusual.

It is thin-skinned and high in acidity, which is why it takes so well to drying for Amarone: the concentration builds without the wine turning heavy. The Valpantena is one of the named sub-zones of Valpolicella, a single broad valley running north from Verona, and it is generally reckoned to give fresher, more perfumed wines than the classico hills to the west. Torre del Falasco is the label of Cantina Valpantena, the co-operative of the Valpantena valley just north of Verona.

The producer

In the Valpantena valley north of Verona, one of Valpolicella's finest side-valleys, Cantina Valpantena crafts its Torre del Falasco range. This is classic Veneto red country, the home of Corvina and the great wines of Valpolicella, from fresh everyday reds to the mighty Amarone.

The range covers the full sweep of the region's styles, from a juicy young Valpolicella through Ripasso and Amarone to the historic sweet Recioto. Each is made with care and a real respect for tradition, capturing the warmth and generosity of the Verona hills.

Well-made, generous and honestly priced, these are wines that punch well above their weight. They offer a complete tour of one of Italy's most loved red-wine regions in a single range.

Serve them cool, with everything from pizza and pasta to slow-braised meats, and taste the warmth of the hills above Verona.
