The wine
A supple, elegant and fruity red with aromas of cherry, raspberry, sweet quince and dried figs complemented by hints of nutmeg, clove and black pepper. Silky tannins with ripe red-berried flavours and a long, smooth finish.
Limniona comes from Thessaly and had almost vanished before a handful of growers revived it in the past twenty years. It is now regarded as one of the most promising red varieties in Greece: medium-bodied, with cherry and floral perfume over fine, silky tannin, and a freshness unusual for the latitude.

Theopetra Estate
View all Theopetra Estate winesThe Tsililis family created Theopetra Estate in 1996 at the foot of the Meteora rocks in Thessaly, farming organically on the slopes below the monasteries.
The setting is genuinely ancient. The Theopetra Cave beside the vineyards has been excavated continuously for decades and holds evidence of human occupation running back some 130,000 years, including what may be the oldest known man-made structure, a stone wall built across the entrance during the last ice age. Grape seeds found in the cave show the vine and this landscape have coexisted for a very long time.
The estate works both the Meteora appellation and vineyards at Tyrnavos, and the range is built around Greek varieties: Assyrtiko and Malagouzia for the whites, Xinomavro and Limniona for the reds, with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah alongside. Limniona in particular, a Thessalian native rescued from near extinction, is one of the more exciting Greek reds.
