The wine
Attractive lemon yellow. Delicate lime zest and citrus, fresh and vibrant with bright acidity.
Gavi is Cortese, grown on white marl in the south-east corner of Piemonte close to the Ligurian border, and it is the region only white of real reputation in a place otherwise given over to Nebbiolo and Barbera. Gavi di Gavi means the fruit comes from the commune of Gavi itself rather than the wider zone. Terre Antiche campaigned for years to have screwcaps permitted on DOCG wines.

View all Terre Antiche winesWhen Liberty Wines began campaigning to permit screwcap on DOCG wines, they did not expect it to take as long as it did. As soon as the law changed they started talking to La Giustiniana about using some of the wine that does not make it into the blend for Lugarara to produce Terre Antiche. At first it had to be declassified to Gavi; it can now be sold as Gavi di Gavi and sealed under screwcap.
The fight was worth having. Italian DOCG rules historically specified cork, on the reasoning that a guaranteed denomination should carry a traditional closure, which made no sense for a wine whose entire appeal is freshness. Cortese, the Gavi grape, is delicate, low in aromatic intensity and easily dulled by even slight oxidation or a tainted cork, so screwcap protects exactly what the customer is paying for.
Gavi di Gavi is the tighter designation within the appellation, restricted to fruit from the commune of Gavi itself in south-eastern Piemonte, close enough to the Ligurian coast for the sea to influence the climate. The wines are dry, lean and citrus-driven, with the faint almond note Cortese leaves on the finish.
