The wine
Home Ranch is the original Seghesio vineyard in the Alexander Valley, planted by the family after they arrived from Piedmont in the late nineteenth century.
Zinfandel is genetically identical to Italian Primitivo and to Croatian Crljenak, and it ripens very unevenly, with some berries raisining on the bunch while others are still green, which is why picking decisions matter more here than with almost any other variety. Seghesio was founded in Sonoma in 1895 and the family name became one of the most respected in the county, built on old-vine Zinfandel from plantings that predate Prohibition. Alexander Valley is warmer than Dry Creek and gives a rounder, riper style of Zinfandel.
