The wine

Vibrant and fruit-driven, with raspberry bon bons, cherry, blueberry and dark chocolate wrapped in panettone aromas.

The Grenache vineyards sit on deep sand with a north-westerly exposure and are farmed simply, without permanent irrigation. Sand is the key to Blewitt Springs: it drains hard, keeps yields low and gives perfume rather than weight. McLaren Vale runs from the Adelaide Hills down to the sea, and Blewitt Springs is its sandy, higher, cooler corner, the source of Australia most perfumed Grenache. Stephen Pannell was Chief Winemaker at Hardys before setting up on his own in 2004.

The producer

S.C. Pannell is one of the most respected names in Australian wine, the label of gifted winemaker Stephen Pannell and his wife Fiona. Based in McLaren Vale, they have led the charge for a fresher, more Mediterranean style of Australian red.

Working with old vineyards across McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills, they champion Grenache, Shiraz and Iberian varieties, farming thoughtfully and picking for freshness and perfume over sheer power. The wines are polished, fragrant and full of energy.

The range runs from vibrant, accessible bottlings such as Field Street and Dead End to the flagship single-vineyard Grenaches of Blewitt Springs, including Old McDonald and Little Branch, each a study in elegance.

Refined, perfumed and thoroughly modern, S.C. Pannell makes some of the most exciting wines in South Australia, McLaren Vale reimagined.
