The wine

Deep mahogany with golden highlights. Complex oloroso characters of roasted walnuts, sweet spices and dried fruits, enriched by coffee and treacle from the addition of Pedro Ximénez.

Cream sherry is a sweetened oloroso. The base wine is fortified to 17.5%, above the level at which flor can survive, so it ages oxidatively from the start and never develops the bready character of a fino. Pedro Ximénez is added afterwards for sweetness and the treacle note. Aged in an ancient solera, the fractional blending system that keeps the style consistent.

The producer

Founded in 1790, Sandeman is one of the most iconic names in the world of fortified wine, instantly recognisable by its famous silhouette of The Don in his black cape and wide-brimmed hat. For more than two centuries it has been a benchmark producer of both Port and Sherry.

In the Douro Valley, Sandeman draws on prime vineyards led by its flagship Quinta do Seixo, crafting the full spectrum of Port from vibrant Ruby and White to cask-aged Tawnies of great age and majestic declared Vintages. Across the border in Jerez, its Andalucian bodega produces a classic range of Sherries, from bone-dry Fino to lusciously sweet Pedro Ximénez, drawing on the same heritage of patience and craft.

The Port range spans Founder's Reserve Ruby, aged 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50-Year-Old Tawnies, Late Bottled Vintage and celebrated declared Vintage Ports, while the Jerez range offers the Don Fino, Character Amontillado, Armada Cream and Royal Ambrosante PX.

Historic, characterful and endlessly versatile, Sandeman remains one of the great houses of fortified wine, a single name uniting the finest of the Douro and Jerez.
