Sandeman 10-Year-Old White Port
£30.95
The wine
A ten year old white Port is an unusual thing. It is aged in cask like a tawny, but made from white Douro varieties, so the long oxidative ageing takes it towards amber, nuts and dried citrus rather than the dried red fruit of an aged tawny. Served chilled, as an aperitif or over ice with tonic, it does not lean on the sweetness a young white Port relies on.
Sandeman was founded in London in 1790 by George Sandeman, a Scot who borrowed three hundred pounds from his father to set up as a wine merchant and went on to build one of the great Port and Sherry houses. The Don, the caped and hatted silhouette drawn by George Massiot Brown in 1928, is among the oldest trademarks in the drinks trade, and it combines a Portuguese student cape with a Spanish sombrero, one for each side of the business. Bottled at 20%.

View all Sandeman winesFounded in 1790, Sandeman is one of the most iconic names in the world of fortified wine, instantly recognisable by its famous silhouette of The Don in his black cape and wide-brimmed hat. For more than two centuries it has been a benchmark producer of both Port and Sherry.
In the Douro Valley, Sandeman draws on prime vineyards led by its flagship Quinta do Seixo, crafting the full spectrum of Port from vibrant Ruby and White to cask-aged Tawnies of great age and majestic declared Vintages. Across the border in Jerez, its Andalucian bodega produces a classic range of Sherries, from bone-dry Fino to lusciously sweet Pedro Ximénez, drawing on the same heritage of patience and craft.
The Port range spans Founder's Reserve Ruby, aged 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50-Year-Old Tawnies, Late Bottled Vintage and celebrated declared Vintage Ports, while the Jerez range offers the Don Fino, Character Amontillado, Armada Cream and Royal Ambrosante PX.
Historic, characterful and endlessly versatile, Sandeman remains one of the great houses of fortified wine, a single name uniting the finest of the Douro and Jerez.
