Sanama Reserva Merlot 2025

The wine
Merlot in Chile has an unusual history: DNA testing in 1994 revealed that a large part of what the country had been selling as Merlot was in fact Carménère, a Bordeaux variety thought extinct after phylloxera.
Genuine Merlot ripens earlier than Cabernet and suits the cooler corners of the valley, giving a softer, plummier wine. Chile is protected from phylloxera by the Atacama desert to the north, the Pacific to the west and the Andes to the east, so its vines grow on their own roots rather than grafted rootstock, which is unusual almost anywhere else in the world. Sanama is made in the Cachapoal valley in Chile, on the generous alluvial soils of the valley floor.
