San Polo Rosso di Montalcino 2023
£23.95
The wine
Bright, clear ruby, with fresh berries and a touch of sour cherry.
Rosso di Montalcino is made from the same Brunello clone of Sangiovese as its famous sibling, but released after a year rather than five, so it shows the estate style young and at a fraction of the price. Montalcino sits south of Siena, hotter and drier than Chianti Classico, and its Sangiovese ripens fuller and darker than anywhere else in Tuscany. San Polo lies on the south-eastern side of the Montalcino hill at Podernovi, farmed organically and among the first Italian wineries built to a certified carbon-neutral standard.
The producer
San Polo
View all San Polo winesSan Polo is a modern, sustainability-focused estate in Montalcino, beautifully sited on a ridge to the south-east of the town. Part of the Allegrini family portfolio, it has quickly become one of the most admired producers of Brunello.
Farmed organically with a deep commitment to biodiversity and low environmental impact, the vineyards yield pure, expressive Sangiovese. Precise, gentle winemaking captures the elegance and freshness of the site.
The range ascends from the bright Rubio and Rosso di Montalcino to the polished Brunello, the profound Riserva and the rare single-vineyard bottlings of Podernovi and Vignavecchia.
Elegant, refined and impeccably farmed, San Polo crafts some of the most compelling and forward-looking Brunello in Montalcino.
