Quinta dos Carvalhais Dão Tinto 2023
£14.25
The wine
Ruby red, brimming with blackberry and plum alongside violet, menthol and a subtle spiciness.
The Dão is a granite plateau ringed by mountains that shelter it from both Atlantic rain and continental heat, and its wines are the most elegant and structured in Portugal, often compared to Burgundy in shape if not in flavour. The red blend is led by Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro, with Jaen, the grape known in Spain as Mencía. Quinta dos Carvalhais lies in the Dão, and the estate has led the replanting of near-extinct local varieties, Encruzado among them, now regarded as one of the finest white grapes in Portugal.
