Plantagenet Lancaster Mount Barker Shiraz 2019
£23.95
The wine
Lancaster is the Mount Barker Shiraz, from vineyards planted on gravelly loam south and west of the town.
Shiraz here comes out peppery and medium-bodied, closer to the northern Rhône than to the Barossa, because the season is long and the nights are cold. The Great Southern in Western Australia is the largest wine region in the country by area and one of the most remote, which keeps volumes low and growing costs high. What it gives back is a long, slow ripening season and wines of unusual definition. Mount Barker is its inland heart, cooler and more continental than the coast at Albany. Plantagenet was the first winery in the Great Southern, founded at Mount Barker in 1968, and works 126 hectares south and west of the town on gravelly loam.
