Pieropan Calvarino Soave Classico 2024
£23.75
The wine
The Calvarino is pale straw yellow in colour with youthful hues. On the nose are lifted aromas of lemon, jasmine and elderflower. The palate is dry, beautifully balanced and elegant, with notes of yellow peach and lemon thyme. The finish is persistent with tremendous finesse.
Calvarino is the vineyard that first made the case for single-site Soave, and Pieropan keep the traditional 70/30 blend of Garganega with Trebbiano di Soave rather than the more usual straight Garganega. The grapes were hand-picked in two passes to catch each variety at ripeness, Trebbiano from mid-September and Garganega into October. After destemming they were gently crushed and pneumatically pressed, and the free-run juice fermented separately at 14 to 18C in tulip-shaped glass-lined tanks.
