Pelissero Barbaresco Vanotu 2021
£70.25
The wine
The Pelissero flagship. A velvety and aromatic Barbaresco with expressive raspberry and cherry, complemented by rose, sage, mint and thyme, carried on sweet tannins to an everlasting finish.
Vanotu is the estate's landmark wine, named in dialect after Giorgio Pelissero's grandfather Giovanni and bottled separately since 1990. It comes from the family's oldest and best-sited Nebbiolo at Treiso, and is given longer ageing than the other crus. Among the most respected wines in Barbaresco.

View all Pelissero winesThe Pelissero family have farmed at Treiso in the Barbaresco commune since 1960, and Giorgio Pelissero has run the estate since the 1980s. It amounts to around forty hectares, worked without herbicides.
Treiso is the highest of the four Barbaresco villages and the coolest, and its wines are typically the most perfumed and finely structured of the appellation. Barbaresco itself is Nebbiolo grown a little lower and warmer than Barolo, closer to the moderating influence of the Tanaro, and it ripens earlier as a result: the appellation requires twenty-six months of ageing against Barolo's thirty-eight, and the wines are generally approachable sooner while giving up nothing in fragrance.
Vanotu is the estate's landmark cru, named in dialect after Giorgio's grandfather Giovanni, and it has been bottled separately since 1990. The house style has moved steadily towards restraint over the years, with less new oak and longer macerations than in the 1990s.
