Outer Limits by Montes Old Roots Itata Cinsault 2024
£16.75
The wine
Cinsault from Itata, Chile oldest wine region, planted by the Spanish in the sixteenth century and long overlooked while attention went to the warm central valleys.
Old Roots refers to the dry-farmed bush vines on decomposed granite that give the wine its lift and its fine tannin. Cinsault is a southern French variety brought to Chile long ago and largely forgotten, and it has become one of the more exciting things happening in South American wine. Outer Limits is the Montes range for varieties and places outside the Chilean mainstream, made where the family judged the site more interesting than the convention.

Outer Limits by Montes
View all Outer Limits by Montes winesOuter Limits is the adventurous, cool-climate range from the acclaimed Chilean producer Montes. It gathers wines from the country's most extreme and exciting frontiers, pushing viticulture to the coast, the far south and ancient old-vine sites.
The project seeks out marginal, characterful terroirs, from the fog-cooled coastal hills of Zapallar to the granite of Apalta and the old, dry-farmed vines of the ancient Itata Valley. Sustainable farming and a fresh, expressive style capture the energy of each site.
The range is full of discovery, from a vivid coastal Sauvignon Blanc and rare Albariño to an elegant Zapallar Pinot Noir, a bold Apalta Mediterranean blend and a charming old-vine Itata Cinsault. Each explores a different edge of Chilean wine.
Fresh, distinctive and full of personality, the Outer Limits wines reveal an exciting, contemporary side of Montes. They are a thrilling exploration of Chile's frontiers.
