The wine
Grignolino is one of the great oddities of Piedmont: a pale, high-acid, firmly tannic red that looks almost like a rosé in the glass and tastes nothing like it.
The name comes from grignole, the local word for the pips, of which it has an unusual number, and they are the source of its tannin. It was once the everyday wine of the Monferrato nobility and has been in steep decline for decades, which makes serious examples worth seeking out. Mura Mura is a young Piedmontese estate with holdings at Costigliole d Asti, Barbaresco and Serralunga d Alba, the founders having come to wine from a background in farming.
