Müller-Catoir Mussbach Spätburgunder 2024
£22.45
The wine
Intense black cherry and elderberry with freshly ground pepper and bay leaf. The palate is cool, silky and very fine, with terrific freshness, soft tannins and juicy, almost explosive sour cherry fruit.
Pinot Noir from the Mussbach valley, where Ice Age gravel deposits known locally as Kieselstein give excellent drainage and radiate warmth into the vines. The vines are around 20 years old, hand picked and fermented slowly before maturing in small wooden casks. Certified organic.

Weingut Müller-Catoir
View all Weingut Müller-Catoir winesMüller-Catoir has been in the same family since 1744, when Johann Wilhelm Catoir founded the estate at Haardt, on the edge of the Palatinate Forest above Neustadt an der Weinstraße. Philipp David Catoir, the ninth generation, runs it today with cellar master Dominik Leyrer. The estate is a member of the VDP and farms its 25 hectares organically, with every wine made only from its own vineyards.
The soils are the story here: Haardt sandstone, clay, loess, limestone and the Ice Age gravels of Mussbach, spread across sites such as Bürgergarten, Herzog, Mandelgarten and Vogelsang. Riesling leads, alongside Weissburgunder, Spätburgunder, Scheurebe, Muskateller and the rare Rieslaner. Hand harvesting, slow fermentations and late bottling give wines of finesse, minerality and quiet precision, and one of the most individual voices in the Pfalz.
