Monte Zovo Custoza 2025
£11.75
The wine
Aromas of citrus blossom, almond and white peach mingle on the nose. The palate is crisp and refreshing, with flavours of grapefruit, green apple and a hint of almond. A delicate minerality adds complexity, leading to a clean, vibrant finish.
Custoza is the blended white of the morainic hills south-east of Lake Garda, and it lives in the shadow of neighbouring Soave despite often being the more interesting wine. Garganega leads, with Trebbianello, a local strain of Friulano, and Chardonnay. The lake moderates the climate substantially.
The producer
Monte Zovo
View all Monte Zovo winesMonte Zovo is farmed by the Cottini family across several properties in the Veneto, from Valpolicella to the southern shore of Lake Garda, with around 200 hectares in total, all certified organic.
The Garda estates are where these wines come from. Custoza and Lugana lie on the morainic hills and clay flats left by the glacier that carved the lake basin, and the lake itself moderates the climate substantially, holding warmth into autumn and preventing the frosts that would otherwise trouble a site this far north.
Lugana is made from Turbiana, which was long assumed to be Trebbiano di Soave and turned out under DNA analysis to be closely related to Verdicchio. It is one of northern Italy's more serious whites, capable of real ageing, which the Riserva category recognises. Custoza is the blended white of the hills south-east of the lake, and lives in the shadow of its neighbour Soave.
