Mecori Duo Etna Rosso 2022
£34.75
The wine
Brilliant ruby-red. Ripe red berries and mineral notes reminiscent of volcanic soil.
Etna is an active volcano, and each eruption lays down new soil, so vineyards a few hundred metres apart can sit on lava flows centuries apart in age. The contrada system names those sites much as Burgundy names its climats, and Muganazzi near Solicchiata is one of them. Nerello Mascalese behaves more like Nebbiolo than a southern Italian red.
The producer
Mecori
View all Mecori winesMecori is a small, artisan producer on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, one of the most thrilling terroirs in the wine world. From high vineyards on Sicily's great volcano, it crafts elegant, mineral reds of real distinction.
Etna's black volcanic soils, dramatic altitude and old vines give wines quite unlike anywhere else, combining freshness, finesse and a smoky, savoury minerality. Careful, low-intervention work in vineyard and cellar lets the mountain speak.
The estate's Duo Etna Rosso is built on the native Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, offering red cherry, wild herbs and volcanic smoke over silk-fine tannins. It is elegant, taut and utterly of its place.
Refined, savoury and mineral-driven, Mecori's wines capture the magic of Etna. They are a compelling expression of Sicily's noble volcano.
