The wine

A Volnay premier cru drawn from more than one of the commune’s premier cru vineyards, which is what “1er Cru” means on a label that names no single climat. Volnay sits between Pommard and Meursault on the Côte de Beaune and has long been known for the most finely built reds of the slope, its limestone-rich soils giving lighter tannins than Pommard’s heavier clay. It is 100% Pinot Noir at 13% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

Volnay is the de Montille family’s home village. Etienne de Montille, the ninth generation, trained as a lawyer before returning to rebuild the estate his father Hubert ran for fifty years, and the domaine now holds 37 hectares across 35 appellations. Farming went organic in 1995 and biodynamic in 2005, with Ecocert certification in 2012. Maison de Montille is the family’s négociant label, buying fruit from growers held to the same standard.

The producer

The de Montille name is one of the most respected in Burgundy, a family rooted in Volnay and celebrated for a pure, structured and uncompromising style. Maison de Montille, the family's négociant house, extends that philosophy across the Côte d'Or under the guidance of Étienne de Montille.

The focus is unwavering: expressive, transparent wines that speak of place. Fruit is sourced from carefully chosen sites, many farmed organically and biodynamically, and vinified with restraint to preserve freshness, minerality and detail.

The range spans white Burgundy of finesse, from a flinty Pouilly-Fuissé to a taut, high-altitude Saint-Romain, through to distinguished reds such as the structured Pommard 1er Cru. Each is marked by clarity and classic Burgundian poise.

Refined, ageworthy and true to their origins, the wines of Maison de Montille offer Burgundy as it should be: elegant, precise and deeply satisfying.
