Weingut Köster Wolf Flonheimer Rothenpfad Riesling Halbtrocken 2024
£12.25
The wine
Halbtrocken means half-dry: between 9 and 18 grams of residual sugar per litre, the traditional German middle ground. It suits Riesling particularly well, since the grape's high natural acidity absorbs a little sweetness without the wine reading as sweet at all. Expect orchard fruit and citrus with a soft, rounded finish.
Rheinhessen is Germany's largest wine region and for decades its least respected, having produced most of the Liebfraumilch that flooded export markets in the 1970s and 80s. A generation of young growers has comprehensively overturned that reputation. Flonheimer Rothenpfad is the estate's site in the hills south-west of Mainz.

Rheinhessen is Germany's largest wine region and for decades was its least respected, since it produced most of the Liebfraumilch that flooded export markets in the 1970s and 80s. That reputation has been comprehensively overturned by a generation of young growers, and the region now produces some of the most exciting wine in the country. The landscape is gentler than the Mosel or Rheingau, with vineyards on low hills rather than cliffs, and the climate is warmer and drier.
Flonheimer Rothenpfad is the estate's site, and halbtrocken means half-dry: between 9 and 18 grams of residual sugar per litre, the traditional German middle ground that suits Riesling's high acidity particularly well.
