Il Sacrato Sangiovese Merlot 2025

The wine
A wonderful blend in which the structure and weight of the Sangiovese complements the plummy earthiness of the Merlot. Succulent and medium bodied, with fresh cherry fruit, subtle complexity and a peppery bite on the finish.
Sangiovese with Merlot from the Emilia-Romagna plain, made unoaked for early drinking. Sangiovese is Italy's most planted red and the backbone of Chianti and Brunello, but on the flat alluvial soils here it gives a lighter, softer wine, which is exactly what the region's food asks for.
The producer
Il Sacrato
View all Il Sacrato winesIl Sacrato is an Emilia-Romagna range from the plains between Bologna and the Adriatic, working the everyday grapes of central Italy.
Emilia-Romagna is better known for its food than its wine, and with reason: this is the country of Parmigiano Reggiano, prosciutto di Parma, balsamic vinegar and ragu. The wines evolved to accompany that cooking rather than to be contemplated, which is why the region's reds tend towards acidity and freshness rather than weight.
Trebbiano and Sangiovese are the staples, joined here by Pinot Bianco and Merlot. The Po valley's deep alluvial soils and long growing season produce reliable, clean, well-made wine in quantity, and the honest description of these is that they are made for the table on a weekday.
