The wine
Sossego means quiet or repose in Portuguese, and the wine is made to be exactly that: an easy Alentejo red drunk young rather than kept.
The reds here blend Aragonez, which is Tempranillo, with Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet, the last of these a teinturier whose flesh is red as well as its skin and which the Alentejo has made its own. The Alentejo covers a third of Portugal, a vast plain of cork oak and wheat where the summers are punishing and irrigation is essential. Vidigueira sits on the Serra do Mendro, the ridge that divides the region, and the higher, cooler side is where the wines keep their freshness. Herdade do Peso is at Vidigueira in the Alentejo, one of the cooler corners of a famously hot region.
The producer
Herdade do Peso
View all Herdade do Peso winesHerdade do Peso is a leading estate of the Alentejo, the vast, sun-drenched region of southern Portugal. Owned by Sogrape, it combines a historic vineyard with modern winemaking. Its wines are rich, generous and full of southern character.
The estate's vineyards lie on schist and clay soils under the hot Alentejo sun, tempered by cooling breezes. Native grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Aragonez and the deeply coloured Alicante Bouschet thrive here. Careful farming keeps the fruit ripe yet balanced.
The range climbs from the everyday Sossego and Trinca Bolotas wines through the structured Revelado and Reserva to the rare, old-parcel Parcelas. Each shows the warmth and depth of the Alentejo. They are ripe, smooth and food-friendly.
Herdade do Peso's wines combine southern Portuguese generosity with real polish. They over-deliver at every level and age well at the top. A fine taste of the Alentejo.
