Heidi Schröck & Söhne Riede Kulm Blaufränkisch 2024
£20.45
The wine
Ried Kulm is a named single vineyard at Rust, planted to Blaufränkisch, the great red grape of Burgenland.
The variety is high in acidity with a peppery, dark-fruited character sitting somewhere between Syrah and Pinot Noir in weight, and it is one of the few central European reds capable of real ageing. Lake Neusiedl is vast and shallow, and it moderates the climate on both sides: it stores summer heat, reflects light onto the vines and generates the autumn mists that make botrytis reliable. Burgenland is Austria red wine heartland, which is unusual in a country better known for white. Heidi Schröck and Söhne farm at Rust on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, where the vineyards form a semi-amphitheatre above the water.

Heidi Schröck & Söhne
View all Heidi Schröck & Söhne winesHeidi Schröck & Söhne is a distinguished estate in Rust, on the shores of Lake Neusiedl in Austria's Burgenland. One of the region's most respected growers, it makes characterful whites and reds from native grapes. The wines are pure and full of personality.
The vineyards lie on varied soils around the warm, lake-moderated town of Rust, a historic wine centre. Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt lead the reds, with Furmint among the whites. Careful, traditional winemaking lets each site speak.
The range spans the juicy Junge Löwen and Rusterberg reds, the deeper single-vineyard Riede Kulm Blaufränkisch and a rare, mineral Furmint. Each is fresh, characterful and expressive of place. They show Burgenland at its best.
Heidi Schröck's wines combine Austrian freshness with real depth and craft. They are distinctive, food-friendly and beautifully made. A rewarding taste of Burgenland.
